La Salvetat-Saint-Gilles is a French commune situated in the north of the département of Haute-Garonne, in the région of Occitanie. From a historical and cultural standpoint, the commune lies within the Pays toulousain, which extends around Toulouse along the valley of the Garonne, bordered to the west by the hills of the Savès, to the east by those of the Lauragais and to the south by those of the valley of the Ariège and the Volvestre. Exposed to a modified oceanic climate, it is drained by the Aussonnelle and by various other small watercourses.
A little history
The medieval origins of La Salvetat-Saint-Gilles remain imperfectly known. Local tradition long attributed the construction of a first château to Raymond IV de Toulouse, known as Raymond de Saint-Gilles, between his accession to the comté de Toulouse in 1088 and his departure for the First Crusade in 1096. This attribution, regularly repeated in local publications, is not supported by any contemporaneous document currently identified and must therefore be treated with caution. The development of La Salvetat appears, on the other hand, to be part of the movement of creation of sauvetés that characterised the 11th and 12th centuries in the South-West.
