La Motte-Servolex (pronounced [la mɔt sɛʁvɔle] or [la mɔt sɛʁvɔlɛks]) is a French commune located in the département of Savoie, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. It forms part of the agglomération chambérienne and of Grand Chambéry, of which it is the second largest commune by number of inhabitants, as well as the fourth commune in the département with more than 10,000 inhabitants, after Chambéry, Aix-les-Bains and Albertville.
A little history
A priory, dedicated to Saint Jean Baptiste and placed under the rule of Saint-Augustin, developed from the 12th century onwards. Atop the mound stands the église Saint-Jean-Baptiste, to the sides of which a priory (demolished in 1925) and a château became attached. The château was the property of the Pingon family, then of the Costa family, before becoming a boarding school run by the frères des écoles chrétiennes, and then a private technical secondary school which remains in operation today. It is at the foot of this motte that the "centre" gradually took shape, at first a simple village, then a market town, taking in a school, a town hall, shops, craftsmen and cafés. The parish of Servolex was dedicated to saint Étienne.
