La Guerche (often found as La Guierche) was initially part of the Nivernais, like Germigny, and more particularly under the viscounts of Nevers from the family of Champallement. It then passed to the houses of Barres and St-Vérain (with all due reservation, the genealogy of the Barres being unclear). Agnès de Champallement et de La Guerche († 1235) married around 1194/1202 Pierre Ier des Barres († around 1226), son of Guillaume Ier and Hélissende de Chaumon, parents of Pierre II des Barres († around 1233, sire du Bois-Rozerain at La Guerche, and of Chitry, married around 1210/1220 to Isabelle de Champlitte) and of Guillaume II des Barres († around 1244), the latter being the father of Pierre III des Barres († after.
