L'Isle-en-Dodon (in Gascon Occitan, L'Isla de Haut [lil.lɔ de hawt]) is a French commune situated in the west of the département of Haute-Garonne, in the region of Occitanie. From a historical and cultural standpoint, the commune lies within the pays de Comminges, corresponding to the former comté de Comminges, a division of the province of Gascogne spanning the current départements of Gers, Haute-Garonne, Hautes-Pyrénées and Ariège. Exposed to an altered oceanic climate, it is drained by the Save, the Gesse, the Espienne, the ruisseau de Larjo and various other small watercourses.
A little history
Situated between Toulouse and the Pyrénées, the town, a fortified market town dating from the 12th century, is reminiscent of the bastides of the Toulouse region. It was built by the counts of Comminges. One of the earliest among them, Bernard Dodon, gave it his name. At the centre of the town, the square is surrounded by houses typical of the Gascon country, with their canopies and their renders in various colours, which conceal the timber framing and protected the cob walls. For about twenty years, the restoration of the town centre, already well under way, has been a communal priority.
