Jausiers is a French commune situated in the département des Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, in the région Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur. It lies in the vallée de l'Ubaye. Its inhabitants are known as the Jausiérois.
A little history
Traces of Iron Age occupation (burials) were found there in the 19th century. In late Antiquity, Jausiers formed part of the vallis Moccensis, named after the Roman family the Moccii, who must have owned significant estates in the valleys. It fell, in religious terms, under the archbishopric of Turin. The name subsequently evolved into vallis Muscio (12th century), vallium Mucii (13th century), and then in the 14th century into Vallis Montii, that is to say the Val-des-Monts, a district of the vallée de Barcelonnette that existed until the 18th century. The fief was held by the comtes de Provence until 1388, before passing to the comtes de Savoie until 1713 (traité d'Utrecht).
