Istres (pronounced [istʁ(ə)]) is a French commune, a sub-prefecture of the département des Bouches-du-Rhône, in the région Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur. It is the chief town of the arrondissement d'Istres, of the canton d'Istres, and a member commune of the métropole d'Aix-Marseille-Provence. Flanked by the étang de Berre and the étang de l'Olivier, the commune borders the plaine de la Crau and lies close to the massif des Alpilles, the Camargue and the Mediterranean coastline.
A little history
From the Palaeolithic period, the site of Istres was occupied by nomadic tribes. The earliest traces of activity date back to the final Magdalenian, around 10,000 years BC, with the occupation of the abri Cornille, a rock shelter on the left bank of the vallon de Sulauze. Years later, at the end of the Neolithic period, around 4,000 years BC.
