Honfleur is a French commune situated in the département of Calvados, in the Normandie region. A port town, it is located on the southern bank of the estuary of the Seine, opposite Le Havre, very close to the exit of the pont de Normandie. It has a population of 6,640 inhabitants.
A little history
According to Guy Le Hallé, the port town was formerly a Gallo-Roman saltworks. [Doubtful information.] The first written mention attesting to the existence of Honfleur comes from Richard III, duc de Normandie, in 1027. It is also established that in the mid-twelfth century, the town represented an important transit port for goods leaving Rouen for England. A fortified stronghold under Charles V, the core of the town was surrounded from the thirteenth century onwards by ramparts, protecting within that confined space the parishes of Saint-Étienne and Notre-Dame.
