Hauterives is a French commune located in the département of Drôme, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. The commune is particularly well known for the Palais idéal, a work listed as a historic monument and created by Ferdinand Cheval, a simple postman of the commune, who designed and built it with his own hands over 33 years between 1879 and 1912. Its inhabitants are known as the Hauterivois.
A little history
According to legend, Count Anselme, originally from Mayence, and his son Pinabel, both of whom robbed passers-by, lived in the manor. The paladin Roland, who was at that time fighting in Dauphiné against the Moors, put an end to their sinister exploits after storming their lair. At the beginning of the Middle Ages, the Ferlay family is mentioned among the very oldest families of the mandement of Hauterives. In the Middle Ages, the village was fortified. The ramparts were pierced by four gates.
