Grenade, also known as Grenade-sur-Garonne (in Occitan, Granada de Garona), is a French commune in the Occitanie region. Situated in the north of the département of Haute-Garonne, it lies approximately 25 kilometres from Toulouse and Montauban, and halfway between Albi and Auch. From a historical and cultural standpoint, the commune is in the pays de Rivière-Verdun, a small electoral pays in the east of Gascony, set apart from the major communication routes, and spreading across the terraces of the left bank of the Garonne, between the valley of the Save and the Lomagne, extending into Toulousain Gascony.
A little history
The earliest traces of human presence date back to the Neolithic period, and significant remains from the Gallo-Roman era have been found on the left bank of the Garonne. The town is a bastide founded in 1290 at the initiative of the Cistercian monks of the abbaye de Grandselve, who had founded Beaumont-de-Lomagne around ten years earlier. The town was the subject of a paréage agreement between the monks and the seneschal Eustache de Beaumarchais, representative of King Philippe le Bel. The new bastides created during this period were given the names of influential major cities of the time, from Spain or Italy, such as Fleurance (Florence), or Cologne.
