Around 1180, Henri II granted, by virtue of his office of connétable de Normandie, to Guillaume du Hommet eight fiefs in England and three in Normandie, Maisy, La Haie de La Luthumière (Brix) and Auppegard. In 1190 in Tours, Richard Cœur de Lion confirmed the grant, as the office had been held by his father, Richard Ier. Grandcamp was the seat of a capitainerie générale, established in April 1554 by Henri II, comprising two battalions, which François Ier organised and which Louis XIV reinforced, making Grandcamp an administrative and defensive centre, a role it would retain until the 19th century.
