Gordes (pronounced [gɔʁd]) is a French commune situated in the département of Vaucluse in the région of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur. The commune is listed among Les Plus Beaux Villages de France. The village is one of the most visited villages in the Parc naturel régional du Luberon.
A little history
The shelters of Baume Brune, in a cliff on Joucas and Gordes, are a group of 43 prehistoric shelters of which only 8 are decorated. Apparently nothing justifies the selection of these 8 shelters, except echolocation. Studies in archaeoacoustics have shown that the only decorated shelters are those emitting reflected sounds. Shelter no 12, the most decorated and the only one decorated with black paint, is also the one for which the reflected sounds are the strongest. The origin of Gordes is linked to the Celtic people of the Vordenses, who erected a defensive oppidum for Cavaillon at the summit of the rock where the village currently stands.
