Fronton (Occitan, Frontonh) is a French commune situated in the south-west of France, in the north of the département of Haute-Garonne, in the Occitanie region. From a historical and cultural standpoint, the commune lies within the Frontonnais, a pays between the Garonne and the Tarn made up of a succession of stony terraces that have given rise to rich terroirs, renowned for their wines and their fruits. Exposed to an altered oceanic climate, it is drained by the Rieu Tort, the ruisseau de Rival, the ruisseau de Sayrac, the ruisseau la Margasse, the ruisseau de la vergnède, and by various other small watercourses.
A little history
Fronton is among the oldest vineyards. It was the Romans who planted the first vines on the land overlooking the valley of the Tarn. Life in Fronton has been marked by the Wars of Religion, the passage and billeting of troops, the weather, the plague and, exceptionally, the visit of one or another important figure, Philippe le Bel, Charles IX, his cousin the future Henri IV, and Louis XIII who touches those suffering from scrofula in 1632. In the 16th century, the importance of Fronton declined as the attacks of the Protestants proved fatal to it.
