In December 1331, Robert VIII Bertrand de Bricquebec, bailli de Cotentin, obtained from the king of France Philippe VI de Valois an annual fair known as the Saint-Maur fair at Magneville and Fontenay-le-Marmion. On 24 February 1343, Robert gave it to his brother Jean, seigneur de Magneville. From 1829, at the initiative of Arcisse de Caumont, archaeological excavations were undertaken on the site of the tumulus de la Hogue with its burial chambers dating from the Neolithic period.
