Fleury-sur-Orne est une commune française, située dans le département du Calvados en région Normandie, peuplée de 5 941 habitants (les Fleurysiens). Originellement nommée Allemagne, la commune a été rebaptisée Fleury-sur-Orne par décision du conseil municipal le 23 août 1916, validée par le conseil des ministres le 12 avril 1917, en hommage au village Fleury-devant-Douaumont situé dans le département de la Meuse, qui a été détruit en 1916 pendant la bataille de Verdun.
A little history
En 1817, on découvre des fossiles de teleosaurus, à l'origine de la controverse entre Georges Cuvier et Étienne Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire sur les « crocodiles de Caen ». Le site de Fleury-sur-Orne est célèbre pour ses monuments d'une longueur impressionnante, un ensemble de tombes néolithiques a été découvert, composé d'une série de tombes monumentales de 4500 av. J.-C. construites avec les plaques de gazon et allant de 12 à 375 mètres de long sur 3 m de large, entourées de fossés allant de 20 cm à 12 m, et qui recelaient des hommes armés d'arc ainsi que leurs femmes. Le site comprend 32 monuments de tailles variables, contenant les sépultures de 19 individus de la période néolithique.
