Étupes is a French commune located in the département of Doubs, the cultural and historical region of Franche-Comté and the administrative region of Bourgogne-Franche-Comté. Its inhabitants are called the Erbatons and Erbatonnes from the local dialect, in Franc-Comtois, Lai Herbatons, lambs born in autumn, having spent the winter in the stable, discovering the world of spring with wonder.
A little history
Étupes belonged to the comté de Montbéliard, which was attached to France in 1793. The origins of Étupes date back to the Gallo-Roman period, at which time the Via Agrippa linking Mandeure (Epomanduodurum) to Strasbourg passed through the village. Archaeologists even found traces of a wooden bridge spanning the Allan. Several centuries later, Étupes marked History once again thanks to its magnificent château, built in 1770 on the site of the current lotissement du château and dismantled stone by stone in 1801 to erase all symbols of the Ancien Régime.
