Éternoz is a former French commune situated in the département of Doubs, in Franche-Comté, in the administrative region of Bourgogne-Franche-Comté. It was created in 1973 through the association of the former communes of Alaise, Coulans-sur-Lizon, Doulaize and Refranche. On 1 January 2025, it merged with the commune of Saraz to form the new commune of Éternoz-Vallée-du-Lison.
A little history
In 1855, the architect Alphonse Delacroix put forward before the Société d'Émulation du Doubs the identification of Alésia with the site of Alaise, in Sequani territory. This Comtois thesis was supported by Jules Quicherat and Ernest Desjardins (who subsequently retracted), and was later taken up by Georges Colomb. This thesis, widely supported in the 19th century and in the first half of the 20th century, would make it possible to explain numerous details of Caesar's account, and to understand why Caesar speaks of "the oppidum of the Mandubii" (Man Dubis = men of the Doubs, according to a disputed etymology).
