Éguilles ([eɡɥij], in Provençal, Agulha [aˈɣyʎɔ]) is a French commune situated in the western suburbs of Aix-en-Provence, in the département of Bouches-du-Rhône in the region of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur. The «u» in «Éguilles» is not silent and must be pronounced.
A little history
A settlement created in 1004 under the name of Aculea, it has its earliest foundations from as far back as the 8th century. The death of Queen Jeanne Ire opened a succession crisis at the head of the county of Provence, with the towns of the Union d'Aix (1382–1387) supporting Charles de Duras against Louis Ier d'Anjou. The King of France, Charles VI, intervened and sent the seneschal of Beaucaire, Enguerrand d'Eudin, to whom Guillaume-Roger de Turenne rallied. Éguilles, a possession of the latter, was therefore neutral at the start of the war, and on the Angevin side by the end of the decade.
