A little history
The history of Dives-sur-Mer is principally marked by the preparations for the Norman conquest of England by the Duke of Normandy, Guillaume le Bâtard. From 1 August 1066, Guillaume established a large part of his fleet at the mouth of the Dives, protected from an English attack by a narrow channel between two sandbanks, and set up his camp on the heights of a plateau to the east of the port. Having waited from 12 August to 27 September 1066 for favourable winds, Guillaume was forced to move his forces further north. It was ultimately from Saint-Valery-sur-Somme that the crossing to the beaches of Pevensey took place.
