Cormicy (pronounced [kɔʁmisi]) has been, since 1 January 2017, a new French commune situated in the département of Marne in the Grand Est region. It is formed of two delegated communes, Cormicy (historically situated in the département of Marne) and Gernicourt (historically situated in the département of Aisne). It also comprises two hamlets destroyed during the First World War and never rebuilt, Sapigneul and la Neuville.
A little history
The original origins of the commune are difficult to determine. It is situated in the immediate vicinity of the valley of the Aisne, not far from sites where prehistoric settlements were discovered, such as at Cuiry-lès-Chaudardes. The first inhabitants of the valley of the Aisne doubtless explored the surrounding hills of Sapigneul, where an arrow head with a winged mounting was discovered, or the heights that overlook the site that is today built up. The presence of a settlement in the Gallo-Roman period is better documented.
