Contes covers 19.5 km², lies between 123 and 642 m above sea level and had 7,897 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Contes is a French commune situated in the Alpes-Maritimes department, in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. Its inhabitants are called the Contois. A historic commune of the Nice hinterland and of the former comté de Nice, it has always been a structuring town for the valley through which flows the tributary of the Paillon that bears its name, the Paillon de Contes.
A little history
The occupation of the site of Contes dates back at least to the Ligurian period, around the 1st and 2nd millennia before our era. The village was then part of the tribe of the Vediantes, whose territory extended across the valleys of the Paillon and the Roya, as well as the lower and middle valley of the Var. Their capital was Cemenelum, corresponding to the current Nice district of Cimiez. This tribe, which came into early contact with the Massaliot Greeks (Nikaia-Nice was one of their trading posts) as well as with the Romans, from the 3rd and 2nd centuries before our era, always maintained a relationship of neutrality or even alliance with these powers.
