Combourg [kɔ̃.buʁ] is a French commune, chief town of the canton of the same name, situated in the département of Ille-et-Vilaine in the région of Bretagne. In 2023, with 6,411 inhabitants, it is the 33rd most populous commune in Ille-et-Vilaine and the 102nd in Bretagne. Its inhabitants are called the Combourgeois and the Combourgeoises (or more rarely Combournais and Combournaises).
A little history
As early as the Gallo-Roman period, Combourg occupied a strategic position. Moreover, it saw intense craft activity as shown by the numerous tegulae, amphorae, traces of tile kilns and the common and sigillated ceramics found on the territory. A Gallo-Roman building was detected by aerial survey. Thanks to archaeomagnetic dating carried out on materials, the date of construction was able to be placed between 10 and 50 AD.
