Cognin is a French commune situated in the département of Savoie in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Neighbouring Chambéry, it forms part of the agglomération chambérienne and of Grand Chambéry, of which it is the 4th largest commune by number of inhabitants. It was in Cognin that Robert Badinter, along with his mother and brother, took refuge during the Second World War.
A little history
The first mention of the village of Cognin appears in a cartulaire from Grenoble, under the term « ecclesia de Cohonnino ». One of the oldest documents relating to the commune is the census of the « Parroiche » of Cognin carried out on 3 January 1562 with the aim of levying the gabelle, a tax on salt. During the Second World War, the commune served as refuge for the Badinter family. Robert's mother, who took the name Robert Berthet, took refuge there with her two sons while the father, Simon, had been arrested by Klaus Barbie after falling into a trap in Lyon (he would die deported to Sobibor).
