Chouilly is a French commune situated in the département de la Marne, in the Grand Est region. Its inhabitants are called the Chouillats and the Chouillates or alternatively the Bilots, in reference to the many geese that were formerly reared in the village.
A little history
The inhabitants of the village are nicknamed Bilots (geese). The village is therefore sometimes still called Chouilly les Bilots. Various explanations are given for this nickname. One attributes it to the bad temper of the inhabitants, the other to the fact that many geese used to roam the main street of the village (formerly the RN 3). This goose population served as the pretext for a popular event organised on the occasion of the "journée de Noël" orchestrated by the Association des Parents d'Élèves [date unknown]. The children of the school paraded through the streets of the village, preceded by a flock of geese led by a keeper and his dog.
