There existed in Chazelle-sur-Lyon a parish of the church of Saint-Romain-le-Vieux depending on the Île Barbe, older than the current église Notre-Dame and which disappeared in the 13th century. J.-E. Dufour formally located it on the site of the hamlet la Tour. In 1889, the tramway ran for the first time between the stations of Viricelles-Chazelles and Saint-Symphorien-sur-Coise, which are 5 kilometres apart.
