A little history
In the area surrounding the town, in the bois de Bertichères on the commune of Trie-Château, several traces of the Neolithic period remain, including a dolmen known as the Pierre trouée and a menhir. The central mound of the village was originally smaller but was raised by the first builders of a motte-and-bailey castle in the early Middle Ages. Chaumont was the capital of the county that bore its name, which already existed during the reign of Philippe Ier. This county comprised an expanse of land estimated at approximately eighty square lieues, and the first counts were the beneficiaries of important positions at court.
