A little history
From the 7th millennium BC, people of the Mesolithic period had settled in rock shelters, notably the one now known as the Grand Abri de la Font-aux-Pigeons (Late Mesolithic, approximately 6460 to 6200 cal BC, and Cardial culture, approximately 5260 to 4860 cal BC, the break in the stratigraphic sequence being due to erosion around the middle of the 6th millennium), discovered in 1899. The grotte Sicard, a sepulchral cave, dates from the Cardial culture (Early Neolithic).
