Châteauneuf-Grasse (known locally as Châteauneuf, in Provençal Casteunòu (classical and Mistralian) [kas.teu̯.ˈnɔu̯]) is a village and French commune situated in the département des Alpes-Maritimes, in the région Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur. Its inhabitants are called the Châteauneuvois or Castelnevois.
A little history
The village was founded in the 12th century by the lords of Opio. They built a new château on the highest point of their lordship. A "catellaras" was already to be found there, a fortified enclosure dating from the Iron Age. The inhabitants of Opio subsequently came to settle in this Châteauneuf in order to protect themselves from incursions by the people of Grasse, and the site became Châteauneuf d'Opio.
