Exposed to a modified oceanic climate, it is drained by the Sinaise, the Riollette, the Sept Fonds, the Goutte Noire, the Grange and various other small watercourses. Châteaumeillant is a rural commune with 1,629 inhabitants in 2023, having previously reached a population peak of 3,974 inhabitants in 1901.
A little history
This town, whose neighbouring hillsides produce renowned grey wines, played an important role during the Gallo-Roman period as a market and communications hub. It is said to have been evangelised by Saint Genès, martyred, it is believed, on the site of the present church. Known as Mediolanum (the "middle plain") in antiquity, the town of Châteaumeillant has been inhabited since at least the end of the 3rd century BC.
