Châteaugiron is a new commune located in the département of Ille-et-Vilaine in the région of Bretagne, formed in 2017 by the merger of the former communes of Châteaugiron, Saint-Aubin-du-Pavail and Ossé. In 2023, with 10,845 inhabitants, it is the 10th most populous commune in Ille-et-Vilaine and the 36th in Bretagne.
A little history
A long rural occupation lies at the origins of Châteaugiron. Gaulish enclosures (3rd century BC to 1st century AD), remains of Gallo-Roman settlement (1st to 4th centuries) including a cremation necropolis and a remarkable statuette of a centaur, and traces of mediaeval craft activities (6th and 9th centuries) together restore a thousand years of village life. The first lord, Ansquetil, originally from Normandy, lived in the first half of the 11th century. He came to Bretagne most likely in the retinue of Havoise de Normandie, who was to marry the Duke of Bretagne, Geoffroy. Upon the death of the latter around 1008, she assumed the regency, her son being only 10 years old.
