Castellane (pronounced [kas.t̪ɛ.ˈlan]) is a French commune, sub-prefecture of the département of Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, in the region of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur. With approximately 1,500 inhabitants, Castellane is the second least populated sub-prefecture in France, after Largentière in Ardèche. The name of its inhabitants is Castellanais.
A little history
Seven communes were successively attached to Castellane, most of them in the 1970s. These are Castillon, attached in 1948 at the time of the construction of the barrage de Castillon. Chasteuil, the community is cited in the 13th century, under the forms Castaneum and Castonium. Éoulx, the community is cited in 1045, under the form Evols. The abbaye Saint-Victor de Marseille held property there, but in all likelihood never established a priory there. Robion, the community is cited around 1045, under the form In Rubione.
