Castelginest [kastɛlʒinɛst] is a French commune situated in the north of the département of Haute-Garonne, in the région of Occitanie. From a historical and cultural standpoint, the commune lies within the Pays toulousain, which extends around Toulouse along the valley of the Garonne, bordered to the west by the hills of the Savès, to the east by those of the Lauragais and to the south by those of the valley of the Ariège and the Volvestre. Exposed to an altered oceanic climate, it is drained by the Hers-Mort, the ruisseau de Carles and various other small watercourses.
A little history
The formation of the village of Castelginest is linked to the demographic growth experienced by the Toulouse region between the 10th and 13th centuries. In the 10th century, the population appears to have been concentrated on the domain of Vilaigon, identified as a large domain from the Frankish period, a terminium, that is to say a subdivision of the ministerium of Saint-Pierre, in the pagus of Toulouse. A small church, dedicated to Saint Pierre and in the possession of the abbaye Saint-Sernin in Toulouse, already existed in 960 on the territory of Vilaigon. The banks of the Hers, often marshy, are interspersed with nauses and fisheries.
