Cassis [kasis] or [kasi] (Carcisis portus in the Roman period, 1st century BC) is a commune in the south-east of France situated in the south-eastern suburbs of Marseille, in the département of Bouches-du-Rhône and the region of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur. It is characterised by cliffs found across its territory and is known for its Cassis wines (white, but also rosé) produced in the region.
A little history
The oldest traces of occupation of the site date back to 500 or 600 years BC. On the heights of the Couronne de Charlemagne, the remains of a fortified settlement, the oppidum du Baou Redoun, show that the local Ligurians lived by fishing, hunting and farming. Links with Massilia, a city founded by the Phocaeans, suggest that Cassis may have been a stopping point on Greek maritime routes.
