Calvi, the town
Calvi covers 31.2 km², lies between 0 and 700 m above sea level and had 5,788 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Calvi is a French commune situated in the département of Haute-Corse and the territory of the collectivité de Corse. Built on the gulf of the same name, it lies in the north-west of the island. Since antiquity, it has been demographically and politically the principal town of the Balagne.
A little history
Archaeological excavations carried out along the coastal strip and in the hinterland show that the bay was occupied as early as the Neolithic period (5,000 to 2,500 years BC). The remains discovered indicate the principal locations, the plage de l'Alga, Raccu, the presqu'île de la Revellata along the shoreline, and further inland, the plateau de la Serra and the Grotta Agnellu, the two most important prehistoric sites of the town. In his work La Corse dans l'Antiquité et le Haut Moyen Âge, the historian Xavier Poli examined the period from the origins of Corsica to the expulsion of the Saracens in the 12th century, which he says had been particularly neglected.
