Bastia ([bastja], in Corsican, [baˈsti.a], in Italian, [baˈstiːa]) is a French commune situated in the département of Haute-Corse. It has been the prefecture of the département since 1976. With 46,867 inhabitants (2023 census), Bastia is the second most populous commune in Corsica after Ajaccio.
A little history
The only traces of human presence in the region are said to be the bones of a hare called Lagomys corsicanus and a few human remains in the Toga quarter, which are thought to date from the Neolithic period. The Greek geographer Ptolemy mentions a city called Mantinon, of which no trace and no information has reached archaeologists and historians. At the beginning of the 14th century, there was nothing in the region but a Pisan chapel in honour of Saint-Nicolas. At that time, Gênes was in conflict with the Crown of Aragon over possession of the island, with Gênes having gained a foothold in the Deçà des Monts and Aragon in the Delà des Monts.
