Cadenet, the town
Cadenet covers 25.1 km², lies between 147 and 376 m above sea level and had 4,363 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Cadenet is a French commune situated in the département of Vaucluse, in the région of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, on the southern slope of the massif du Luberon and in the valley of the Durance. Its inhabitants are called the Cadenétiens. Cadenet is the birthplace of André Estienne (1777-1837), the tambour d'Arcole (1796), whose memory is recalled by a monument.
A little history
During the Protohistoric period, the territory of the commune was the site of the tribe of the Caudellenses (Cavares). The presence of a significant oppidum on the hill of the Castellar, the oppidum du Castellar, made Cadenet the first capital of the pays d'Aigues in the pre-Roman era. After the arrival of the Romans, this territory formed part of the province of Gallia Narbonensis. In the 8th century, Saracen attacks completely destroyed the settlement.
