Cabriès, the town
Cabriès covers 36.6 km², lies between 124 and 261 m above sea level and had 10,240 inhabitants in the 2023 census. Its inhabitants are called the Cabriessiens.
Cabriès [kabʁijɛs] (Cabriés in Provençal) is a French commune, situated in the département of Bouches-du-Rhône in the région of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur. The name of the inhabitants of Cabriès has never been officially recognised, although research tends towards the gentilé Cabries(s)iens. The commune of Cabriès also encompasses the village of Calas.
A little history
The region is rich in traces of Neolithic occupation. The neighbouring hills bear the traces of numerous oppida, and that of Baou-Roux (Commune de Bouc Bel Air) protects the south of the territory at less than two kilometres away. Occupied some 6,000 years ago, excavations there have established a settlement belonging to the Couronnian culture, between 3200 and 2500 BC. Plan de campagne contains several shelters that have yielded Neolithic objects. The Celto-Ligurians established at Baou Roux and at Cabries formed part of the Salyen people, whose capital was Entremont, to the north of present-day Aix-en-Provence.
