Bruguières is a French commune situated in the south-west of France, in the north of the département of Haute-Garonne, in the région of Occitanie. From a historical and cultural standpoint, the commune lies within the Frontonnais, a pays between the Garonne and the Tarn made up of a succession of stony terraces that have given rise to rich terroirs, renowned for their wines and their fruits. Exposed to an altered oceanic climate, it is drained by the Hers-Mort and by various other small watercourses.
A little history
Two Merovingian sarcophagi were discovered in 1979 during construction work on the toll plaza of the A62 motorway. Likewise, in 2004, during the construction of a housing development at La Mouline, remains of Roman ceramics and amphorae were identified close to an ancient cemetery dating from around the 11th century. These discoveries led to an archaeological rescue operation enabling the excavation of the medieval site. More than 330 burials and more than 180 various pits (silos, rubbish dumps, extraction pits, etc.) were excavated, placing the occupation within a cemetery dated by radiocarbon analysis to between the 8th century and the 13th century, associated with a medieval settlement.
