A little history
During the Gallo-Roman period, the site was called Briennonum and its port, on the banks of the Loire, was an important centre of activity. A Roman road from Roanne to Autun and Nevers passed through Briennon, where Gaulish coins have been found. In the Middle Ages, the Grand Chemin from Belleville to Vichy and the Chemin Ferré from the Hôpital de Malléval to Roanne and Nevers, established on the former Roman road, crossed there. The two powerful seigneurial families present in Briennon in the 11th century were those of Semur and the Le Blanc.
