Brienne-le-Château [bʁijɛn lə ʃato] is a French commune situated in the département de l'Aube in the région Grand Est. The commune, located in the parc naturel régional de la Forêt d'Orient, was home to the schooling of Napoléon Bonaparte, future general of the French Revolution, First Consul and then emperor under the name of Napoléon 1er.
A little history
The site was probably already occupied by the Gauls and its name appears to derive from the Celtic briavenna, which denotes a series of pontoons connected to the long-standing port activity of Brienne-la-Vieille. Its castle was built by the brothers Engelbert and Gobert de Brienne, described by chroniclers as brigand barons, besieged and destroyed by King Louis IV d'Outremer in 951, then rebuilt shortly afterwards. From the 10th century onwards, Brienne formed a county, which gave its name to the illustrious maison de Brienne. Five families successively held the county, the famille de Brienne followed by those of Enghien, de Luxembourg, de Loménie and de Bauffremont.
