Brides-les-Bains is a French commune situated in the département of Savoie, in the region of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. Its administrative centre is a village at the bottom of a valley in the massif de la Vanoise, in Tarentaise, and the commune had 442 inhabitants in 2023. A commune oriented towards thermal spa tourism from the 19th century onwards, and more recently towards skiing thanks to the installation of a cable car linking the town to the resorts of Méribel and Méribel-Mottaret, Brides-les-Bains was awarded the label of « station classée tourisme » in 2013.
A little history
From Antiquity, the site was known for the virtues of its waters. In the 16th and 17th centuries, the archbishops of Moûtiers made use of the waters of the hamlet des Bains. In 1653, then in 1774, flooding from the river, the Doron de Bozel, silted up the springs. In 1818, a natural disaster upstream in the valley, near Champagny-en-Vanoise, released an enormous mass of water, resulting in the uncovering of a rocky massif from which the present thermal spring began to gush, enabling the creation of the modern resort.
