A little history
A village situated at the centre of the valley, Breil, today Breil-sur-Roya, is an obligatory point of passage where the roads connecting Provence and the Nice country, the Riviera dei Fiori, via Vintimille, to the Po plain all meet. This village long had an activity linked to mule-train convoys connecting the port of Nice to Piedmont via the valley of the Roya and the col de Tende. The oldest traces of human presence in the valley of the Roya date back to the Bronze Age, with several thousand rock engravings dating from 1800 to 1500 BC having been found in the vallée des Merveilles, near Tende.
