A little history
Already known during the Roman occupation, this market town was fortified in the 15th century. The rise of Boën, originally a simple hamlet in the parish of La Bouteresse, was encouraged by its lords, the Damas de Couzan. They granted a charter of liberties to its inhabitants in 1247, transferred their family tomb to its church, and then fortified what was in 1314 one of the thirteen towns to send delegates to the États du Forez. In 1320, Amédée de Couzan obtained permission from the king and the comte to enclose the town, with 11 towers and 4 gates, of which one tower survives.
