Bessèges, in Occitan Bessèja, is a French commune situated in the north of the département of Gard, in the Occitanie region, within the parc national des Cévennes. Exposed to a Mediterranean climate, it is drained by the Cèze, the Ganière and various other small watercourses. Included within the Cévennes, the commune possesses a remarkable natural heritage, a Natura 2000 site (the hautes vallées de la Cèze et du Luech) and two natural zones of ecological, faunal and floral interest.
A little history
Under the Ancien Régime, Bessèges was no more than a hamlet in the parish of Robiac, which was then part of the viguerie and diocese of Uzès, archiprêtré of Saint-Ambroix. It continued to be annexed to the commune of Robiac until 1857, when a law of 17 June established it as a commune. Overlooking what would become the mining capital of the basin, the Castellas de Bessèges formerly stood as a strategic lookout post over the valley. Although in ruins today, this stone ancestor remains the privileged witness of the centuries that preceded the industrial epic of the territory.
