Bellegarde is a French commune situated in the south-east of the département of Gard, in the Occitanie region. Exposed to a Mediterranean climate, it is drained by the canal d'irrigation du Bas-Rhône Languedoc, the canal du Rhône à Sète, the Roubine, the Rieu and by another watercourse. The commune possesses a remarkable natural heritage, a Natura 2000 site (the "costières nîmoises"), a protected area (the "Costières de Nimes") and five natural zones of ecological, faunal and floral interest.
A little history
Recent research by the INRAP carried out during 2016-2017 shows an occupation attested from the Upper Palaeolithic. The site has yielded engravings dating from the Magdalenian period, that is to say 20,000 years before our era, depicting notably profiles of horses engraved on small limestone slabs. The Roman aqueduct dating from the second half of the 1st century bears witness to human activity during the Gallo-Roman period. The increasingly confirmed hypothesis is that this aqueduct supplied water to the Trinquetaille quarter associated with the city of Arles.
