Barjac covers 42.7 km², lies between 112 and 364 m above sea level and had 1,608 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Barjac is a French commune located in the north-east of the département of Gard, in the région of Occitanie. Exposed to a Mediterranean climate, it is drained by the ruisseau de Roméjac, the ruisseau de Chantabre, the ruisseau de Condoubrie, the ruisseau de Malaygue, the ruisseau de Malibaud, the ruisseau de Soulas and by various other small watercourses. The commune possesses a remarkable natural heritage composed of two natural zones of ecological, faunal and floral interest.
A little history
In Antiquity, Barjac was situated on the Voie d'Antonin, the Roman road between Valence and Nîmes. The most southerly milestone of the approximately fifty that the Helviens had placed along this road was found at Barjac, to the north of la Villette. The place was therefore situated on the territory of the Helviens, though precisely where the boundary with that of the Volques arécomiques lay is unknown. The site was occupied as attested by the Gallo-Roman estate of Malhac situated in the plain of Barjac and rediscovered in the 1860s, notably by Léon Allègre.
