Anduze, in Occitan Andusa, is a French commune situated in the centre of the Gard département, in the Occitanie region. Exposed to a Mediterranean climate, it is drained by the Gardon and by various other small watercourses. Included within the Cévennes, the commune possesses a remarkable natural heritage, a Natura 2000 site (the falaises d'Anduze) and three natural zones of ecological, faunal and floral interest.
A little history
The seigneurie d'Anduze, which can be found from the beginning of the 10th century, belonged to the maison d'Anduze, which was at that time one of the most powerful in the Languedoc, minted its own currency and whose members styled themselves marquis and prince d'Anduze. In 1266, the seigneurie d'Anduze was attached to the French crown. As the chef-lieu of a viguerie, Anduze was also the birthplace of French sericulture, which appeared there as early as the end of the 13th century. The town then became the regional centre for the silk and wool trade.
