Aigues-Vives covers 12 km², lies between 10 and 87 m above sea level and had 3,331 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Aigues-Vives is a French commune situated in the south of the Gard département, in the Occitanie region. Exposed to a Mediterranean climate, it is drained by the canal d'irrigation du Bas-Rhône Languedoc, the Rhony and by one other watercourse. The commune possesses a remarkable natural heritage, a Natura 2000 site (the "costières nîmoises"), a protected area (the "Costières de Nimes") and a natural zone of ecological, faunal and floral interest.
A little history
It is near the small town known as Pataran, Pataranum in 1434, that Aigues-Vives was built. In the 7th century, the Saracens made an incursion into Pataran and laid it waste. The population took refuge on a nearby hill, where a spring of abundant living waters was to be found. The refugees from Pataran built their new homes around this spring and the new settlement took the name of Aigues-Vives (Ayga-Viva), a reference to the source that had led them to settle in that spot.
