Aigues-Mortes, in Occitan Aigas Mòrtas, is a French commune in Petite Camargue, situated at the southern tip of the département du Gard, in the région Occitanie. Exposed to a Mediterranean climate, it is drained by the Vidourle, the canal du Rhône à Sète, the Vistre and two other watercourses. Included within the Camargue (delta du Rhône), the commune possesses a remarkable natural heritage, three Natura 2000 sites (the Petite Camargue, the étang de Mauguio and the petite Camargue laguno-marine), four protected areas (the bois du Boucanet, the Camargue Gardoise, the étang de l'Or and the Petite Camargue) and twelve natural areas of ecological, faunal and floral interest.
A little history
The ramparts of Aigues-Mortes were built by Saint Louis. Indeed, from the beginning of his reign, Louis IX wished to secure an outlet to the Mediterranean. It is in this context that he had the port of Aigues-Mortes built around 1241, defended by a fortified town. A Roman by the name of Peccius developed the first salt marshes and gave his name to the marais du Peccais. The exploitation of salt had begun as early as the Neolithic period and had continued into the Hellenistic period, but the ancient working of the salt marshes did not give rise to any major archaeological discovery, and it is probable that these remains were destroyed by the installations of the modern salt works.
