A little history
The site of « La Prieurée » was occupied during the Middle Palaeolithic (early Weichselian), with an industry of the Micoquian type. The most recent layer (layer A) is attributed to the Middle Pleniglacial (final phase of the Middle Palaeolithic). The founding of this new town is relatively recent. Villa super Vennam (which became Villa Nova Domini Archiepiscopi super Vennam and then Villeneuve-sur-Vanne) was founded by the archbishop of Sens as early as the middle of the 12th century (probably shortly before 1172) on the boundary of the royal domain and the county of Champagne, at a distance from the old Roman road, on the bank of a millstream of the Vanne.
