A little history
The town of Villeneuve-sur-Yonne, situated in the lower valley of the Yonne, was inhabited as far back as the Neolithic period. A Gaulish defensive camp (early 1st century BC) existed in the vicinity of Villeneuve (see Château), which was taken by Jules César during his campaign against the Sénons. Gaulish and Roman coins were discovered there, as well as pottery.
